Reliability Analysis of Capacitors in Voltage Regulator Modules With Consecutive Load Transients

Capacitors are critical in voltage regulator modules (VRMs), which contribute to store energy and stabilize the output during load transients. Usually, VRMs work with consecutive transients, would bring more electrothermal stress capacitors affect reliability of compared steady-state operation. Recently, some efforts have been made investigate power electronic converters. Unfortunately, transient processes commonly ignored, can impair accuracy lifetime estimation. Regarding this issue, letter investigates influence transients on damage VRMs. A 150-W VRM is introduced as a case study. First, stresses steady state analyzed. Then, calculation considered from single capacitor hybrid banks. In addition, suitable configuration banks also provided order maximize its lifetime.
